A Thousand Years of History in the Heart of Montserrat

Panoramic viewpoints, scenic trails, and unique rock formations surround the Montserrat Sanctuary — a mountain with soul. Discover the Montserrat Museum, home to masterpieces by Caravaggio, Picasso, Dalí, and other great masters of art.

The origin of the Montserrat Monastery, located in the heart of the mountain about 720 meters above sea level, dates back to the year 880, when, according to legend, some shepherds saw a light and heard celestial songs in a cave. There they found the image of the Virgin, later known as the 'Moreneta of Montserrat' due to the dark color of her skin and her ancestral symbolism. Since then, this image has become the patron saint of Catalonia and the main reason for pilgrimage to the sanctuary.

The monastery was officially founded in 1025 by Abbot Oliba and has survived fires, wars, and exclaustrations, remaining a sacred, resilient place deeply tied to Catalan identity. Over the centuries, Montserrat has been visited by popes, kings, artists, and millions of anonymous travelers who have sought in this enclave more than architectural beauty: they have sought inspiration, faith, and inner peace.

Nowadays, an excursion to a place of worship like Montserrat is also an immersion into history, culture, and nature. In addition to the monastery and the visit to the Moreneta, the experience includes the possibility to explore places like the Holy Cave, where it is said the Virgin was found, and enjoy multiple routes around Montserrat, such as the climb to Sant Jeroni, the highest point of the massif with breathtaking views.
